What is Organic food?
There is a great variety of organic foods being produced and processed in Ireland from all of the main food groups including meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, eggs, grains, cereals, nuts, seeds, dairy products and cooking oils.
Organic farming is an alternative food production method which prioritises sustainable production practices, respectful use of the countryside and concern for animal welfare. There are currently 1,695 registered organic operators in Ireland with 52,390 hectares of land being used to produce organic foods.
How do I know it is Organic?
Since July, all pre-packaged organic food products in Europe which meet organic standards carry the “Euro-Leaf” EU organic logo. The logo also helps you to identify the place of farming e.g. “IE” means that it has been produced in Ireland.
This logo may not be present on unpackaged food in which case you should simply ask the person selling it to you!

The organic sector in Ireland is governed by EU legislation which is implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Farmers, growers and processors undergo a stringent annual inspection process before receiving a licence from one of the Organic Control Bodies to sell their produce as organic. The five bodies are Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association (IOFGA), Organic Trust, The Institute for Marketecology (IMO), Global Trust Certification Limited (GTC) and Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA). All foods produced to these standards is permitted to be labelled as ‘organic’.
Remember, look for the Euro-Leaf logo when buying organic food!
