 Bord Bia’s National Amenity Horticulture Awards 2008 / 2009 

 Winners Announced

Bord Bia held its annual National Amenity Horticulture Awards on Friday 6th February in The Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. Almost 200 industry representatives attended the Awards which were presented by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. Trevor Sargent T.D.

The National Amenity Horticulture Awards recognise and promote excellence across three key sectors of the industry. This year Bord Bia awarded 32 garden centres; 24 nurseries and 11 landscape service providers. Additionally, a number of special awards were presented on the night including:

Speaking at the ceremony Minister Sargent said “The world is changing and this industry can be very much a part of the developing “Green Economy” that will lead us out of recession. Bord Bia is consulting with industry representatives on a long term vision for this sector, so that we can fully develop the potential for Irish Amenity Horticulture. This is something I called for and something that is especially important in difficult times. "

Last week Bord Bia published its strategic priorities for the period ahead, recognising that at a time of increasingly scarce resources the alignment of those resources with changing client needs has never been more urgent. At the Awards Mr. Aidan Cotter, Chief Executive, Bord Bia commented"These priorities are translated into sectoral strategies, which in the case of the amenity sector includes pursuing those actions that can best ensure that client companies continue to compete and respond to the challenges brought about by the drop in consumer spending, the decline in the construction sector and two years of poor weather during the key sales period."

The Bord Bia Garden Centre, Nursery and Landscape Quality Programmes are designed to define standards for the industry and encourage participants to reach them. The schemes are voluntary and participants receive two announced inspections over a twelve-month period.
