Linda Cullen – Food and Beverages Division, Bord Bia – Irish Food Board
The 2013 TASTE Council Summer School in association with Bord Bia takes place on Friday 3rd May at the Grain Store, Ballymaloe, Co. Cork. The theme of this year’s Summer School is Education and the TASTE Council will launch a module for transition year students designed to introduce students to the food industry in Ireland.
This one day event will bring together stakeholders in the second and third level education sector, government bodies, artisan and speciality food and drink producers, chefs, policy makers, media and food journalists and NGO’s. It will provide a forum for discussion on future education policy for the sector as well as networking opportunities for delegates with peers and media.
The symposium will commence at 10am and finish at 5.30pm with the following key highlights:
- Presentations by international food authors, Alice Waters and Stephanie Alexander.
Alice Waters is owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California and has championed local, sustainable farms for over four decades. She is the founder of The Edible Schoolyard, a model public education programme in the USA that integrates edible education into the core curriculum.
Stephanie Alexander is devoted to the development of a school kitchen garden programme in Australia. She is the best-selling author of fourteen books, including The Cook’s Companion, The Kitchen Garden Companion, and her memoir A Cook’s Life.
- Panel discussions on the current and future role of second and third level in food education featuring representatives from Government Departments, Education, Agencies, Artisan food producers, entrepreneurs, media and TASTE Council members.
- At 6pm there will be a unique dining experience in Big Shed at Ballymaloe featuring a range of produce from local food producers followed by music and entertainment.
