The Bord Bia Pigmeat Quality Assurance Scheme (PQAS) sets out the requirements for best practice in pig production at farm level. It provides a uniform mechanism for recording and monitoring pig quality assurance criteria on the farm with a view to achieving continuous improvement in production standards. The Scheme is accredited under EN45011. The PQAS Standard can be downloaded below.
For the consumer and retailer, the scheme ensures that the pigmeat is produced to the highest standards at primary production level. To learn more about factory processing of pigmeat, please see the Meat Processor Quality Assurance Scheme page.
The PQAS is currently under revision and is expected to launch in the autumn 2017.
The Pigmeat Quality Assurance Scheme is voluntary and application for membership certification is open to all Producers who have a valid National Pig Identification and Tracing Scheme herd number and who wish to participate.
Producers seeking membership can apply to Bord Bia using the application form below.
The application will then be evaluated and, if appropriate, a full independent audit of the producer will be carried out to evaluate the capability of the applicant to meet all the requirements of the Standard.
When the producer is deemed to have complied with the requirements of the Standard, the herd will be considered for certification under the Scheme.
The producer will be issued with a certificate for the herd which will be listed on the Bord Bia register/database. Once certified, each member will be independently audited at 18 month intervals to maintain their certification.
In addition, Bord Bia reserves the right to carry out unscheduled audits on an announced or unannounced basis for the purpose of verifying compliance with the requirements of the Standard or to determine that corrective / preventive actions specified during audit are in place.
