The Irish will always have a grá for traditional home cooked food. Indeed, 64% consider bacon and cabbage the meal most synonymous with Ireland. So much is our love of the delicious Irish staple; 3 in 10 crave bacon and cabbage when travelling abroad!
This research coincides with the launch of the Bord Bia Ham and Bacon campaign, which runs from Monday 23rd February to Sunday, 22nd March. With St Patrick's Day fast approaching, the campaign encourages consumers to switch to choosing Bord Bia Quality Assured ham and bacon. The Quality Mark is the only symbol that ensures food is independently checked against Bord Bia's highest quality standards. It also means consumers will know where the food comes from.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Irish rugby hero Sean O'Brien commented, "I fancy myself as a bit of a foodie and love to try out new recipes. Ham and bacon always feature strongly in my cooking and I always choose ham and bacon with the Quality Mark when shopping. It's no surprise to me that bacon and cabbage is top of the pecking order when it comes to most popular traditional Irish meals."
Celebrated chef Catherine Fulvio also commented, "Everyone loves a home-cooked meal, like mammy used to make! There is something so comforting about bacon and cabbage served with lots of fluffy potatoes. I encourage people to flex their culinary creativity and check out the Bord Bia website for both traditional and modern recipes with Quality Assured ham and bacon that will appeal to the whole family."
Teresa Brophy, Consumer and Trade Marketing Manager at Bord Bia also stated, "A Kantar Worldpanel report carried out in January 2015 found that 95% of Irish households regularly buy bacon and that, as a nation, we spend €196 million annually on it, representing an increase of 3% from last year. We are encouraging consumers to always choose products with the Bord Bia Quality Mark so that they know their food has been produced to the highest Bord Bia quality standards and can be traced back to the farm."
