Sustainable Assurance Schemes

On-farm assessments are a core component of the Origin Green programme and are delivered through Bord Bia’s Sustainable Assurance Schemes. These schemes operate across the beef and lamb, dairy, horticulture and egg sectors, providing a framework for measuring and monitoring performance against a range of indicators. Independent auditors conduct regular assessments, gathering information on areas including greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, water use, energy efficiency, soil management and socio-economic factors.

Overall Ambition

More than 77,000 members participate in Bord Bia’s Sustainable Assurance Schemes, including farmers involved in beef, dairy, horticulture and egg production. These schemes incorporate independent assessments and data collection across a range of quality and sustainability-related measures.

Farm Assessments

Bord Bia’s Sustainable Assurance Schemes include regular farm audits and assessments. Information gathered through these assessments provides data on a range of indicators and supports programme monitoring and reporting activities. The schemes are accredited to recognised standards, including PAS 2050 and ISO 17065.

Animal welfare

Animal welfare  forms part of the assessment criteria within Bord Bia’s assurance programmes. During farm audits, independent assessors review compliance with animal welfare requirements and applicable regulations.

Carbon footprint assessments

Carbon footprint assessments are conducted on participating dairy and beef farms at regular intervals. These assessments use recognised methodologies to measure greenhouse gas emissions and collect data relating to farm-level carbon footprints. Assessment activities are accredited to the Carbon Trust PAS 2050 standard.
