National Potato Day!

October 1st is National Potato Day - the annual celebration of one of Ireland’s favourite foods, the delicious potato!

It All Starts with Potatoes!

This year Bord Bia is showing people that when it comes to delicious meals; “it all starts with potatoes!” Whether it’s a warming potato curry after a hike, a nutritious potato salad after yoga or a shepherd's pie for a mid-week family meal, potatoes can suit all lifestyles.

Our National Potato Day Ambassador

Chef Kwanghi Chan is showcasing just how versatile this tasty vegetable is this National Potato Day.

According to Kwanghi, “A lot of people don’t realise but potatoes are an ideal companion for Asian cooking as they carry the flavours of spices and herbs so well. My top three suggestions for delicious potato meals are to add potatoes to mixed vegetable stir-fries, creamy curries or to an easy-to-make homemade spice-bag!”

Keep an eye on our other National Potato Day Ambassador’s Instagram Accounts – Rachel Purcell and Sarah Battle - to see how they will celebrate the humble spud this year!

Meet the Growers – The Sheridan’s

John Sheridan from Kilberry Co. Meath started growing potatoes professionally in 1967. His son Mark now farms the land with his cousin Noel.

Mark Sheridan said, “When my father started growing potatoes, back then on a good day they could harvest 10-12 tonnes, all of which were handpicked. Now, we are harvesting 400 tonnes per day using mechanisation, which is about 50,000 potatoes.”
