GIY market still holding its own

27 February 2015

Mike Neary, Horticulture Department, Bord Bia – Irish Food Board

Market research carried out by Ipsos MRBI on behalf of Bord Bia on the size of the gardening market in Ireland in 2014 has shown that the value of plants purchased for the GIY (Grow it Yourself) market was €14million. This includes herbs, fruit and vegetable plants, trees and seeds for planting. While this value is back 13% since the last measure in 2011, purchase occasions are up by 3%, which indicates that there remains a strong interest in the growing your own activity.

The research shows that 4% of the adult population purchased products to grow at home. The most popular products purchased included herbs, salad vegetables and root vegetables, which were purchased by 54%, 24% and 16% respectively of consumers who are buying from this category.
