War on Waste
Last week the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its latest report, stating that the world faces unavoidable multiple climate hazards over the next two decades, with global warming of 1.5C.
Further evidence, if it was needed, that stakes have never been higher when it comes to the fight against global warming.
We know that reducing food waste is key in the quest to find sustainable solutions now and into the future. According to the 2021 UN Environment Programme Food Waste Report, roughly 17% or 930M tonnes of food available at consumer level is wasted each year. The majority (61%) is household waste, followed by food waste at foodservice level – at 26%, it equates to twice that of retail food waste (13%).
One innovative app that aims to address the issue of food waste, while providing consumers with convenient and value-saving options is Too Good To Go. The app has more than 40 million active users in 16 international markets and launched in Ireland at the end of 2021. It empowers the public and local businesses to fight food waste by offering ‘Surprise Bags’ of surplus food at the end of the day to stop it from going to waste.
