Inflation to breach 5pc for first time since the boom years

Annual inflation is set to breach the 5pc mark in Ireland in October, for the first time in two decades. According to a flash estimate from the EU’s statistics agency, Eurostat, Irish prices are expected to rise 5.1pc in October. The figure was up from a 13-year high of 3.7pc reached in September. Annual inflation figures compare the current month with the same month a year earlier. Average inflation in the 19-member eurozone is predicted to hit 4.1pc this month on the back of a 23.5pc jump in energy prices.
Unemployment in Ireland falls to 7.9%

Unemployment in Ireland fell to 7.9 per cent, it’s lowest since the onset of the pandemic, according to most recent data published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). This is against the 20.3 per cent rate recorded in October 2020. Around 205,000 people were estimated to be either out of work or in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (Pup) during October 2021. When excluding Pup recipients, October’s unemployment rate stood at 5.2 per cent, the statistics agency reported.
