Health and Wellbeing has been a key driver of innovation and growth for food and drink in the past years, and consumer interest in this trend was only sharpened during the pandemic. As outlined in our Consumer Lifestyles Trend research, this will continue, with consumers adopting both proactive and protective approaches to managing their own health. ("Bord Bia Consumer Lifestyle Trends – Health and Wellbeing", 2022). However, as consumers take more control over their own wellbeing, there are many different ideas about what makes a product healthy, and many different approaches companies can take towards the trend. The below resources can help you understand this complicated area.

 

1. Mintel, Patent insights: maternal nutrition (March, 2022). As consumers look for more personalised nutrition supports, producers can target them at particular life stages. This article gives an overview of global trends in patent innovation on the maternal nutrition space across food and supplements. Recent patents for maternal health focus on a healthy gut, natural ingredients with health benefits and links to pregnancy-related metabolic health complications.

2. GlobalData, TrendSights Analysis 2021: Health & Wellness (August, 2021). This global report provides an overview of the Health & Wellness mega-trend and its impact on consumer behaviour. Consumers are increasingly health conscious and they are proactively seeking products that can improve their health. Advances in technology have helped consumers stay highly connected to health information and news around the clock, raising awareness of health issues.

3. Canvas8, How are gut feelings changing digestive health? (January, 2022). Gut health has expanded to encompass almost all food and drink categories in the US, with related claims appearing on everything from cereals and snacks to spirits and dog food. Digestive health is particularly of interest to the growing number of people who want to take a more proactive approach to their wellbeing. This report overviews how the category is developing, and outlines some of the latest innovation.

4. Euromonitor, Wellness - Mapping Key Opportunities in Asia Pacific (February, 2022). This report analyses the wellness megatrend in Asia Pacific by utilising Euromonitor’s Megatrend Quantification Model. The Megatrend Quantification Model analyses the direction of the megatrend, identifying key markets for growth based on a selection of relevant proxies and drivers, to help understand the magnitude and direction of the drivers affecting the megatrend development in each country.

5. FMCG Gurus, Health and Wellness - Immunity What Next Global Report (March, 2022). Across the globe, only one in two consumers say that they are satisfied with their immune health, with this falling to four in ten in South America. As a result of this, seven in ten consumers say that they are looking to boost their immune health over the next twelve months, further reflecting how health goals continue to shift and focus on reducing vulnerability to disease and illness.
