Bord Bia's Henry Horkan Honoured in London

Date: 23/07/2015

Bord Bia's Henry Horkan, based in the London office, received the title of Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers in London recently.  This honour acknowledges the importance of the Irish meat industry in the UK and reflects well on the active role Bord Bia plays in promoting Irish meat.  Admission to the Livery  is an act of dedication to the cause of good government and order, and of community service. As a Liveryman, Henry also received the Freedom of The City of London at the Guildhall.

The livery companies of the City of London comprise London's ancient and modern trade associations and guilds, almost all of which are styled the "Worshipful Company of..." their respective craft, trade or profession. Historically being a Liveryman conferred certain rights on the business or trade the Company involved, usually allowing the Liveryman to trade within the City of London unhindered and without taxation – e.g. Liverymen of the Worshipful Company of Butchers could bring their sheep across London Bridge without paying a tax. London's livery companies, which currently number 110, play a significant part in city life, not least by undertaking  charitable work and providing networking opportunities. Liverymen retain voting rights for the senior civic offices, such as the Sheriffs and Lord Mayor of the City of London Corporation, an ancient municipal authority with extensive local government powers. Most Liverymen of the Worshipful Company of Butchers are still involved in the meat industry and come from a wide variety of backgrounds within the industry.
