Irish Garden Designer wins Bronze at Tatton Park Garden Show

Bord Bia, Horticulture Ireland sponsor winning design

Date: 18/07/2006

Up-and-coming Dublin garden designer, Ciaran Kirwan won a bronze medal for his display, Erratic, at the Tatton Park Garden Show, the event dubbed 'The Chelsea of the North'.
Bord Bia, Horticulture Ireland sponsored Mr Kirwan's winning display which will be on show from the 19th to the 23rd of July and will be viewed by over 120,000 avid gardeners during the event.
Erratic was designed and constructed by Mr Kirwan and is a modern reworking of rural Irish landscapes inspired by County Wicklow's flora, fauna and geological uniqueness.

Carol Marks, Development Marketing Specialist, Bord Bia, Horticulture Ireland commented on the sponsorship, "Unlike most of Ireland's top garden designers, Ciaran Kirwan is not formally trained in gardening or landscape design.  Free from horticultural design preconceptions, he dares to ask 'why not?'.  Where others may work from a restricted palette of traditions and conventions, Ciaran's approach is fresh and enthusiastic. The Erratic design is a very bold, masculine space, inspired by geology, glacial depositions and the Irish landscape. Bord Bia are very proud to be associated with the project"

Ciaran Kirwan's design, Erratic, features ferns; hawthorns; gorse; and arbutus, the Irish Strawberry tree, which is planted around a submerged sauna and courtyard which is heated by a turf-burning heating system.

Tatton Park Garden Show takes place in Cheshire, near Manchester, and is a celebration of the best in plants, designs and gardening expertise.  Exhibits are judged by specialist RHS Judging Panels before the show opens, and awarded Gold, Silver-Gilt and Bronze Medals.
