Strawberry Season

National Strawberry Week – June 7th – 13th

Date: 31/05/2010

Irish consumers are eating more fresh fruit and vegetables, according to a new study commissioned by Bord Bia. The study found that 24% of consumers are eating more fresh fruit compared to a similar study carried out in 2006, with 22% eating more fresh vegetables. Health, taste and value for money were cited as the main reasons for the increased consumption. The survey findings were released today at the launch of National Strawberry Week, which takes place from 7th -13th of June. More than 76% of the population are now buying strawberries* on a regular basis, an increase of 2.6% over 2009 figures, with annual sales in Ireland valued at €44 million in January 2010.

National Strawberry Week is organised by the Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association (ISFGA) in conjunction with Bord Bia and the IFA. The week long promotional campaign aims to encourage consumers to enjoy more strawberries as we approach the summer season and Irish crops are at peak production. This year, Catherine Fulvio, Ballyknocken Cookery School, has joined forces with the ISFGA to develop a number of strawberry themed recipes, all available on www.bestinseason.ie

Mike Neary, Manager of Horticulture, Bord Bia commented “Fresh fruit and vegetables are a vital part of a healthy diet. Strawberries are an increasingly popular choice among consumers as a tasty, low calorie, convenient snack. As with all fruit and veg, they are best consumed when they are in season, and the Best in Season promotional website www.bestinseason.ie tells you when is the best time of year to be able to purchase fresh and tasty produce locally”

Jimmy Kearns, Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association, added “2009 saw a bumper crop of strawberries, and we are hoping that 2010 will be even better. This summer will bring a big crop of juicy sweet strawberries.”

Strawberries are an ideal healthy treat, low in calories and provide the perfect way to achieve one of the five or more recommended portions of fruit and vegetables a day. A nutrient packed fruit, they are filled with antioxidants giving the body a natural wellness boost. Strawberries are naturally high in fibre, vitamin C and potassium; help maintain a healthy heart and can aid memory function.
