The National Spanish Association of Automated Distributors (ANEDA), has recently taken steps to adapt to the Responsible Living trend, as described by the Bord Bia Consumer Lifestyle Trends, that is particularly important to its millennial customers. Agora found that millennials are the age group most committed to sustainability. Mab Hostelero, declared that 60% of vending machine users are under 24 years old.
Firstly, ANEDA launched its Manifest for Sustainability at the Sustainability Seminar that it held in February in Madrid. According to Restauración News, this document aims to unite the association and over 60 companies in the vending sector that signed it, in working towards sustainable development.
The key commitments in the document include:
- Promoting recycling and the circular economy.
- Contributing to the education of younger generations on sustainable values.
- Establishing concrete objectives in order to reduce emissions.
- Empowering sustainable activities and initiatives, such as supporting platforms focused on education, information and promotion of sustainability.
- Implementing measures that will contribute to improving energy efficiency.
According to the Official State Agency of the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Wellbeing, ANEDA businesses also committed to be more responsible in the stocking of their machines, in order to combat Spain’s obesity issue. This includes the following actions:
- Reducing the maximum amount of sugar added to hot drinks in machines from 7g/100ml to 6g/100ml (- 15%).
- Increasing the percentage of balanced foods that form part of a healthy diet as a total of the products included in the machine from 30% to 50%.
- Increasing the percentage of water in cold drinks machines as a percentage of the total beverage offering in the machine from 30% to 45%.
- Increasing the percentage of fizzy drinks without added sugars in cold drinks machines as a percentage of fizzy drinks included in the machine from 5% to 7%.
- Placing reformulated products and food products that conform with a healthy diet in the most visible areas of the machine.
- Incorporating information or messages about healthy eating on the machines through:
- QR codes, specific stickers, etc.
- Development of a sticker to place in a visible zone of the machines that will direct people towards campaigns related to healthy life habits and healthy & balanced eating habits.
ANEDA’s Manifest and its commitments to the government, demonstrate that the vending sector is collectively working towards a more responsible corporate agenda in terms of environmental sustainability marketing its products towards younger consumers.
