In 2023, Regan Organic Farm made significant strides in reducing packaging waste while maintaining food safety standards. The company successfully minimised packaging for whole chickens from 0.0038 kg/kg in 2022 to 0.0035kg/kg in 2023, by eliminating polystyrene trays and transitioning to a soak pad and lightweight plastic bag, balancing consumer safety with waste reduction.
This packaging alternative maintains the ability to manage moisture and keep the product fresh, while lowering the negative impact on the environment. Though polystyrene trays are still used for chicken portions to meet customer preferences, the company is actively exploring recyclable plastic alternatives.
For direct vegetable sales, paper bags are provided, with encouragement for customers to bring reusable bags. The company’s online sales saw further sustainability improvements with the introduction of wool cool packs in place of polystyrene boxes and ice packs.
This environmentally friendly substitute is made from 100% natural sheep’s wool, which acts as an effective insulator, making it an efficacious packaging transportation solution. These combined efforts led to an overall reduction in packaging intensity, exceeding their milestone target by 10.5%.
