Joe O’Meara
Joe O'Meara runs a 150-acre farm with his wife Catriona and their two children, where they focus on producing rearing cattle for beef. Joe buys calves from local dairy farms, when they are three or four weeks old and raises them to maturity for beef. The calves he purchases are born to Friesian dairy cows but sired (fathered) by Angus or Hereford bulls.
Angus and Hereford are breeds known for being calm and easy to manage. Once they arrive, Joe ensures they are gradually introduced to their new environment and fed a balanced diet. In winter, the cattle are kept indoors and fed a special meal-based diet, but once spring arrives, they are returned to the fields for grass grazing. Animal care is central to Joe's farming philosophy. He regularly checks the health of his herd, using data-driven techniques to avoid unnecessary treatments. By monitoring the cattle closely, Joe only uses medication when absolutely necessary, a practice that reduces antibiotic use and keeps his herd healthy naturally.

Grassland management is another key part of Joe’s approach. He carefully plans when and where his cattle graze to ensure the pastures have time to recover. This rotation system not only helps the grass grow back stronger but also ensures the cattle always have access to fresh, nutritious feed. Joe also applies fertilisers and maintains healthy soil by testing it regularly, ensuring it has the nutrients it needs to support good-quality pasture year after year.

Joe’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond his cattle. He has set aside parts of his farm to promote biodiversity, creating thriving habitats for wildlife like owls. Joe also maintains areas of forestry, which not only enhances the biodiversity of his land but also helps capture carbon, contributing to efforts to combat climate change.
Thanks to these sustainable practices, Joe’s farm was recognised with the Sustainable Livestock Award at the FBD National Livestock Show in 2023. This honour reflects his hard work and dedication to farming in a way that respects both the environment and animal welfare. As a Quality Assured (QA) farmer, Joe ensures his farm meets the highest standards, and regular audits help him continuously improve. He takes pride in producing top-quality beef, showcasing the excellence of Irish farming on a global scale. For Joe, his farm represents more than just a business—it's a way of life that prioritises sustainability, animal care, and quality.
