Sam Hill

Sam Hill runs a family beef farm in Shercock alongside his wife Michelle and their four children. The farm follows a natural cycle where cattle graze on grass in the summer and are fed homegrown crops like silage and barley during the winter. By growing his own feed, Sam reduces costs and keeps the farm largely self-sufficient. Animal care is a priority for Sam. He regularly checks his cattle to make sure they are growing sufficiently, adjusting their feed or care if needed. When new cattle arrive, Sam ensures they have time to settle in and stay healthy as they adjust to the farm’s routine. His hands-on approach helps minimise stress and keeps the herd in great shape.

Sam also places a strong focus on protecting the environment. He has planted hedges and set up protective zones around the lakes and streams on his land, which are home for local wildlife. These efforts not only enhance biodiversity but also improve water quality and reduce the farm's overall carbon footprint. By preserving these natural areas, Sam is contributing to a healthier ecosystem while maintaining a sustainable farm.

In 2023, Sam’s dedication to sustainability earned him the Sustainable Livestock Farmer Award at the FBD National Livestock Show in 2023 a proud achievement for his family. Despite the challenges of farming in difficult conditions, Sam's commitment to balancing farm productivity with environmental care has been recognised.

For Sam, farming is more than a business—it’s a family tradition that he hopes to pass down to his children. His goal is to ensure that the farm continues to produce high-quality, sustainable Irish beef for generations to come, all while protecting the environment and maintaining the high standards that have become his hallmark.
